Kevin Hart Trained With Navy SEAsS For Borderlands Movie

Kevin Hart underwent intense physical training to prepare for his role as Roland in the upcoming film adaptation of the video game series Borderlands.

Kevin Hart reveals the details of his extreme training for the upcoming Borderlands film. Borderlands, directed by Eli Roth, is based on the popular video game series of the same name. The film has an impressive ensemble cast which includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, and Florian Munteanu.

The Borderlands video game series, from Gearbox Software, is set in the outer limits of a galaxy in the distant future where bandits and mercenaries battle over turf and treasure in a society tightly controlled by mega-corporations. Players can role-play as one of several vault hunters, mercenaries seeking treasure and glory from fabled Vaults which are said to contain advanced alien technology and various riches. The first game in the series, on which the movie is mostly based, follows Lilith (Blanchett) on the planet of Pandora as she teams up with former military man Roland (Hart), Krieg the bodyguard (Munteanu), a pre-teen named Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), Dr. Tannis the scientist (Curtis), and a robot called Claptrap (Black), in order to find a Vault.

In an interview with Collider, Kevin Hart reveals his preparation methods for the action film, which included training with Navy SEALs. The comedian expresses the significance of this being his first pure comedy-free action role, which led him to take it seriously with intense combat and weapons training. Hart said:

Borderlands, once again, it’s all about the shock factor. This is me stepping into action full speed ahead. No comedy. I’m responsible for the action. He said, ‘Kevin, if you tell me that you can show up prepared and that you want to come in and knock this out, then you’re my guy.’ So I went, I did some training with some Navy SEALS, I got real good with weapons, I got real good with my hand-to-hand combat. And the experience here in Budapest filming Borderlands has been unreal.

Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland and Claptrap voiced by Jack Black in Borderlands.

Though audiences are used to seeing Hart as a wisecracking ball of energy, it’s refreshing to hear of his potential as a pure action hero. However, the film is not that far removed from the comedy world. Borderlands was written by Roth and Craig Mazin. Mazin is known for creating the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries Chernobyl. Before that, Mazin was prominent in the comedy world with script credits for films in the Scary Movie and The Hangover franchises. Additionally, Roth is known for blending comedy into other genres, like with his horror comedy film Cabin Fever. Currently, Mazin is developing a highly anticipated adaptation of the popular video game The Last of Us for HBO.

Hopefully, Kevin Hart’s preparation will pay off for the dedicated fans of the Borderlands franchise. So far, the behind-the-scenes look at the film has given fans hope of a successful adaptation. Until then, Hart can be seen in the Netflix family drama film Fatherhood and the reboot Jumanji franchise.
