Halloween: Jamie Lee Curtis reads the e-mail exchange between producer Jason Blum and director David Gordon Green that started the new trilogy
Jamie Lee Curtis reveals the e-mail exchange between Jason Blum and David Gordon Green that kicked off the new Halloween trilogy. Jamie Lee Curtis starred in the original Halloween in 1978, written and directed by John Carpenter. She would later star in five of the sequels, including the newest two, Halloween and Halloween Kills, with the final chapter, Halloween Ends, yet to be filmed. David Gordon Green co-wrote the scripts for the new trilogy along with Danny McBride, Scott Teems, Chris Bernier, and Jeff Fradley, which serve as a direct sequel trilogy to Carpenter’s original film, ignoring the several sequels and reboot that followed.
Curtis is a renowned horror “scream queen,” having kicked off her career with Halloween and later starring in a number of genre films, including Prom Night, Terror Train, Road Games, and The Fog, amongst others. The actress continued to make a name for herself in a string of Hollywood hits, including the comedy classic Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, as well as A Fish Called Wanda, My Girl and the James Cameron action classic True Lies. She most recently appeared in Rian Johnson’s franchise-starter Knives Out and is set to play Tannis in Eli Roth’s adaptation of the video game Borderlands.
Halloween Kills, the next chapter in the new trilogy, debuted at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles and Curtis was on hand to introduce the film along with director David Gordon Green, where she revealed the e-mail exchange that gave birth to the new trilogy (via ComicBook), highlighting the simple details that opened up the possibility for Michael Myers to return and kill again. The exchange in question was between Blumhouse producer Jason Blum and director David Gordon Green, where Blum laid out a simple offer that resulted in the new endeavor. Here, Curtis shares the exact e-mail conversation:
“The reason we are here together, talking about Halloween, is because of an email that was sent on September 7th, 2016, at 8:52 PM from Jason Blum to Dave Gordon Green. And it reads…Dated Wednesday, September 7th, 2016, 8:52 PM. Subject, A Moonshot. To David Gordon Green. ‘DGG, maybe this is insane, but because I know you are going to do Susperia, I figured I would ask. Halloween. Creative control. John Carpenter doing the score for you. What do you think? Question mark. A sandbox you would ever want to play in, or am I crazy? Question mark. Jason.’ And then David Gordon Green’s response was, can you read that? From, by the way, the next morning at 5:26 AM.”
Green then takes over after that, saying, “I wrote, ‘Whoa. Let me take a sip of my coffee. Whoa. That’s the first physical reaction I’ve had to a morning email in a long time. Let’s discuss. I just listened to Carpenter on Marc Maron a couple weeks ago, and actually I’ve been keeping up with the music he and his son are doing. They played in Austin, recently. It’s badass.'”
Curtis added afterwards that the e-mail exchange is the whole reason that the new trilogy exists, citing “One email, five years and one month later, two movies in the can, one to shoot, hundreds of f*cking millions of dollars, millions and millions of fans later” as the aftermath of it all. The actress said she wouldn’t be there were it not for Green and went on to thank all the fans in attendance, saying, “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart because without you guys, I have no career, and I couldn’t love you more.”
Curtis will once again return to the role of Laurie Strode for the finale of the new trilogy, Halloween Ends, which is set to debut roughly a year from now on October 22nd, 2022. The actress has returned to the role and carried a level of respect for it, which shows tremendously here. Curtis has always been outspoken when it comes to things she’s passionate about and while Halloween Ends may be the last time she plays Laurie Strode, the actress will always be synonymous with the legacy of Halloween.
