Borderlands Movie Wraps Filming Claptrap Reveal

The Borderlands movie has completed filming in Budapest, Hungary, according to franchise mascbot, Claptrap.

That’s a wrap on Borderlands. Gearbox just announced the Borderlands movie has completed filming in Budapest, Hungary, which means that it’s on to the editing stage of production.

To celebrate the occasion, Gearbox and Lionsgate released the first image of Claptrap that wasn’t just a silhouette. The smarmy robot basically looks the same as he does in Borderlands 3, which confirms earlier reports that the movie will at least look just like the game.

Kevin Hart, who plays Roland in the movie, said that Gearbox went to great lengths to ensure the Borderlands movie shares the same aesthetic as the video game franchise. “The fanbase that follows the game is already huge and unreal. I don’t think they even have a clear understanding of how close we’re coming to the game,” Hart said. “It looks like the game. It’s unbelievable, truly unbelievable.”

In the same interview with Collider, Hart revealed how he trained with Navy Seals in both “weapons” and “hand-to-hand combat” to prepare for the role. He also said that the role will involve “no comedy” and that he’ll be “responsible for all the action.”

While it’s great to know that Borderlands will at least share visuals with the game, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has repeatedly warned Borderlands fans that the movie is set in its own “cinematic universe” and not everything will be the same as the games.

That’s confirmed in the updated plot synopsis that was released along with Claptrap’s photo. Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett) is an “infamous treasure hunter with a mysterious past” who “reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas.” In the Borderlands games, Lilith is not from Pandora, is not a treasure hunter, and possesses incredible magic powers for being one of the universe’s six Sirens.

At some point, Lilith (in the movie) teams up with a “ragtag team of misfits” including Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), and of course, Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black). Hilarity likely ensues, but it won’t be from Roland.

Borderlands will arrive in theatres sometime in 2022.
