Why A Midnight Sons Series Would Be Great For The MCU

The MCU could benefit from a TV show with a darker and more adult tone with the Midnight Sons as protagonists – here’s how and why.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding and bringing more characters from the comics to the big screen and streaming, and there’s one group that would be great for this connected universe: the Midnight Sons. The MCU has been building an extensive connected universe since 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, and its first three phases, collectively known as the Infinity Saga, came to an end with Spider-Man: Far From Home after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Marvel is now ready to move forward with its highly-anticipated Phase 4 and more, which will continue the stories of some previously introduced characters and bring new ones into the mix.

What makes Phase 4 particularly exciting is that it just won’t focus on the movie side of the MCU, as the previous phases did, but also on a long list of TV shows set to stream exclusively on Disney+. These projects will have a direct impact on the movies or connect to them, as is the case of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Branching out to the world of streaming makes it possible for the MCU to bring more new characters, especially some that might be considered too dark, such as Moon Knight, and on that note, there’s one group that would be great for the future of the MCU: the Midnight Sons.

The Midnight Sons is a team of supernatural superheroes who made their first appearance in Ghost Rider vol. 3 #28 in 1992. When Ghost Rider received a vision where Lilith, Mother of All Demons, was resurrected and thus posed a great threat as she planned to use the Lilin, her demonic children to take over Earth, Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze formed the team in order to battle her and her army. The team consisted of the Nightstalkers (Blade, Frank Drake, and Hannibal King), Morbius, Vengeance, and the Darkhold Redeemers (Sam Buchanan, Victoria Montesi, Louise Hastings, Modred the Mystic, and Jinx), all of them brought together by none other than Doctor Strange. The Midnight Sons have fought Lilith and company, Zarathos, and even Blade when, with the help of a page from the Darkhold, he became Switchblade.

The Midnight Sons are darker than other MCU characters, which is exactly what the MCU needs. Although the MCU has brought some very entertaining characters, stories, and events, it seems to have stuck in a certain tone and formula, especially towards the end of the Infinity Gauntlet arc. The MCU has already taken the first steps towards a darker side with Doctor Strange and upcoming TV shows like Moon Knight, but a Midnight Sons TV show could give fans a more adult story similar to the style of Netflix’s Marvel TV shows (which had no real connection to the MCU but were generally well-received by viewers) while still keeping PG-13 for the Disney audience. A Midnight Sons series also feels like a natural step given that Doctor Strange is already part of the MCU and Blade and Morbius are about to be introduced. The latter, however, lives in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, so Midnight Sons could be the crossover between Sony and Marvel characters that fans have been waiting for (and without depending on Spider-Man).

The MCU has a solid fanbase that keeps growing with each project it releases, and with a wide variety of characters that can make the jump from the comic book pages to TV and film, it can explore new styles, tones, and more. A Midnight Sons TV series (or movie) could be very beneficial to the MCU, giving the audience a different type of team with characters from the darker side of this wide universe.
