The Last Kingdom is one of the most popular Netflix shows. And, accordingly, fans can’t wait to see The Last Kingdom season 5 on the streaming service.
There are four seasons of The Last Kingdom available to stream on Netflix right now. The most recent season premiered on Netflix in the spring of 2020.
Because new seasons of Netflix shows are often released about a year apart, fans might be hoping to see the new season this spring.
Unfortunately, that will not be the case. The Last Kingdom season 5 is not coming to Netflix in March 2021, and it’s probably not coming to the streaming service anytime soon.
The Last Kingdom season 5 release date on Netflix
The Last Kingdom needs quite a bit more time between seasons than other Netflix shows. It’s such a major production. Usually, there’s about an 18-month gap between seasons of new seasons of the series.
The Last Kingdom season 4 premiered on Netflix in April 2020, so at the earliest, we would see The Last Kingdom season 5 in November 2021.
Production on The Last Kingdom season 5 started in late 2020, according to our sister site Winter Is Coming. That’s when the cast started to return to Hungary, where the series is filmed.
As mentioned, The Last Kingdom is a big production, so there’s not much hope that we’ll see the new season in the near future. I would agree that it’s going to be late 2021 before we could possibly see the new season, although I’m growing more hesitant.
It looks like it could be 2022 before we see the new season, and that’s simply because of the pandemic. As we’ve seen with other Netflix shows, production is moving more slowly than usual, and there have been major delays pretty much across the board in TV and film production.
For The Last Kingdom season 5 to be released on Netflix in late 2021, production will have to wrap around sometime in May. There’s typically about a six-month gap from the end of production and the release of the season.
So, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but at the time of publishing, The Last Kingdom season 5 will likely be added to Netflix at the end of 2021. If not then, we can expect to see season 5 in early 2022.
