As Hawkeye becomes the final Marvel series of 2021, another show at Disney+ is on the horizon. Actor Samuel L. Jackson (Captain Marvel, What If…) posted a selfie on his Instagram profile with the caption, “Time to get back in the groove. Happy to be back on the attack!#secretinvasion#fuckthatsnap#backwithafury.” Donning an Infinity War-inspired Nick Fury T-shirt, the post confirms production for the previously announced Secret Invasion is finally set to begin.
The series was originally set to begin taping in April of this year. But the timetable was always tentative due to the unknown status of the COVID Delta variant. While the show has had no actual release date, it was always planned for a 2022 debut following the rollout of other Marvel Studios originals such as Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel.
The series itself has been described as “tapping into the paranoia elements” straight from the comic series it is based on. In the show, Jackson will return as Nick Fury to investigate the infiltration of Earth by an alien race known as Skrulls. With the ability to shapeshift and hide in plain sight, Fury will partner with a fellow Skrull, Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline, The Outsider), to defeat the latest threat to the human race. Fury and Talos became acquainted in the 1990s set film, Captain Marvel.
While most of what we know about the Skrulls has been on the big screen, we did see a glimpse of the creatures in one of the final scenes of WandaVision. Teyonah Parris’s (Candyman, Chi-Raq) Monica Rambeau received a message from a Skrull disguised as an FBI agent. The scene not only confirmed Fury’s established relationship with the alien race, but it alluded to Rambeau’s heroic future as the leader of S.W.O.R.D.
In addition to Jackson and Mendelsohn, the series has Emilia Clarke (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Game of Thrones), Olivia Coleman (The Father, The Crown), Christopher MacDonald (Happy Gilmore, Hacks), and rising star, Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami…), all attached to star. Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot) is attached as creator and executive producer of the six-episode season.
