Penn Jillette Joins The Cast Of Upcoming Borderlands Film

Penn Jillette will have a small role in the upcoming Borderlands film as a preacher who gets arrested.

The Borderlands film continues to add stars even as filming is set to begin in Budapest, Hungary. The latest name to join the cast: Penn Jillette of the famous magic duo Penn and Teller.

The news comes courtesy of Penn’s own Sunday School podcast, where he revealed that he’d soon board a plane and head to Hungary. He doesn’t seem to have a named part, and only said he’d appear in a few scenes as a preacher overseeing a wedding. The wedding gets interrupted by a fight scene and then he winds up arrested in a “space paddywagon” alongside Kevin Hart, who’s set to play Roland in the film.

Jillette added that most of his scenes will be with Hart.

Those that have played through Borderlands 3 won’t find the cameo all that surprising. Penn and Teller also appeared in the latest entry into the Borderlands franchise as the villains Pain and Terror, the psycho owner/operators of the giant Agonizer 9000 tank. Pain was not only modeled after Jillette but was also voiced by the magician, while Teller remained silent not just because his stage persona doesn’t speak but also because his in-game model had his mouth sewn shut.

Before that, Jilette appeared with Gearbox CEO on stage at E3 2018 to discuss magic and VR, revealing that the two share a personal relationship that revolves around a shared love of magic.

Besides Jillette’s nameless preacher, Borderlands will have Marcus Kincaid played by Benjamin Byron Davis, Tiny Tina played by Avengers star Ariana Greenblatt, Commander Knoxx by Janina Gavankar, and Danish bodybuilder Olivier Richters as the psycho bandit leader Krom. Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Cate Blanchett will also play most of Borderlands’ main characters.

The next Borderlands game may already be in development. Pitchford recently tweeted that Gearbox is hiring for “the big one” and that Gearbox will be the primary/sole developer of any future Borderlands games. Combine those tweets together and it sure does sound like Borderlands 4 is on the way.
