Pick of the day: Who Do You Think You Are?
9pm, BBC One
Comedian Josh Widdicombe is not the most famous name in this new series of the genealogy programme (others in coming weeks include Ed Balls, Dame Judi Dench and Joe Lycett), which can only suggest that topping the running order means we’re in for some amazing revelations. Starting at the tiny primary school in the remote Dartmoor village where he grew up, Widdicombe admits his greatest fear is “that I come from a really boring family”. There are, however, rumours that he was somehow related to the Baring banking dynasty, and where these lead to is so staggering and full of spoilers that all I’ll say is: eat your heart out, Danny Dyer.
World Cup Live
7.15pm, ITV
England vs Hungary (kick-off 7.45pm). Mark Pougatch presents coverage of the Fifa World Cup Group I qualifier at Wembley Stadium. Gareth Southgate’s men recorded an impressive 4-0 win over the Hungarians in last month’s reverse fixture in Budapest. Northern Ireland’s visit to Bulgaria and Scotland’s trip to the Faroe Islands are both on Sky.
The Great British Bake Off
8pm, Channel 4
“Egg whites and sugar, innit,” says Chigs of this week’s technical challenge. “What can go wrong?” But when it comes to baking a pavlova, Paul Hollywood is on hand to explain the “140 ways” that meringue can go awry, including beading, cracking, letting water in “or indeed collapsing”. It’s dessert week, then, Maggie steadfastly continuing down the traditional route and earning a disapproving stare from Paul, while it’s looking like a Germany-Italy one-two as reigning star baker Giuseppe again impresses and Prue remarks that “Jurgen’s back”.
Dementia & Us
9pm, BBC Two
Eight months into this two-year study following people with varying types of dementia, and it’s spring 2020 and the advent of you-know-what. Lockdown was particularly hard for people with dementia because social interaction keeps their minds active, and former professional footballer Gilly, 75, is a shadow of his former outgoing self. On a lighter note, 45-year-old Chris has a new girlfriend – that’s if he can remember her name (which he eventually does). “I try not to be like his carer,” says Tracy wisely. “It’s not what he wants”.
Murder Island
9.15pm, Channel 4
A reality show in which contestants attempt to solve the fictional murder of a young woman might be questionably timed given the recent and horribly real killing of Sabina Nessa and the trial of Sarah Everard’s murderer – but, that aside, this is turning into an intriguing game of three-dimensional Cluedo. The Ian Rankin-created mystery deepens as we discover that the victim shares a shady history in Glasgow with a few of the other suspects.
Question Team
10pm, Dave
Richard Ayoade hosts a new series that “sets out to rewrite the panel show rulebook by making its players set the questions”. Hardly as earth-shattering as that makes it sound, but it works well – especially with Bob Mortimer on fine Shooting Stars form as he asks questions about DIY and comedian Thanyia Moore filming herself doing a parachute jump as she asks her cleverly themed pop music questions. Actor, comedian and panel-show favourite Kerry Godliman also guests.
