Borderlands studio Gearbox has announced a management shuffle as the company opens up a new division to handle its upcoming TV and film projects.
As a result, Randy Pitchford will be stepping away from his duties of Gearbox Software, the firm’s development arm. While he’ll remain overall Gearbox Entertainment CEO and president, he’ll now be focusing on a new division called Gearbox Studios. This new arm will handle the company’s work in TV and movies, building on and including the upcoming Borderlands film.
Gearbox Software, meanwhile, will now be led by Steve Jones, technical director on the first two Borderlands games. He’s been with the company for 22 years, and all game development decisions will be a function of his role. Pitchford said of Jones’ appointment “The simplest thing I could say is that he is better than me.”
Pitchford himself broke the news in a series of tweets. He said “This move follows my commitment to our missions to entertain the world and our position to scale our creative engine via organic growth.” He continued “With multiple AAA projects underway and many more in our greenlight pipeline along with a raft of great games from Gearbox Publishing and an explosive transmedia business with Gearbox Studios, we are just getting started.”
Earlier this year, the Embracer Group bought Gearbox Entertainment in a deal worth $1.3 billion dollars. The studio’s next game is Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, coming in March 2022.
This move follows my commitment to our mission to entertain the world and our position to scale our creative engine via organic growth. Our organization is well poised for transformative increases in performance and scale.
