A large leak of 2K’s E3 announcements was published yesterday with details about a number of titles, and given that it was confirmed by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, at least one item should be of interest to Borderlands fans.
That would be a new Borderlands spin-off that Gearbox is set to announce. It’s allegedly called Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, based on a recently trademarked name, and stars the destructive child (teenager, now?) leading her own game.
This does appear to be formatted like a traditional Borderlands game with multiple classes of heroes to choose from, and I would imagine perhaps we finally get to play as Tina herself after all these years. Obviously everyone’s mind is going to race to Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, the older Borderlands spin-off that also featured new playable heroes, but was smaller than traditional games.
We know that Gearbox is also making Borderlands 4, so this seems like it will be a stand-in between Borderlands 3 and when 4 is eventually released. No word on if 4 will be teased during the show or not. The existence of these two games would explain why Borderlands 3 never got any additional DLC classes, as new ideas for new heroes are likely just being translated into two separate games that likely need four heroes each, at the very least.
Borderlands 3 was a massive sales hit, and Take Two has expressed supreme confidence in the future of the franchise. A Borderlands 3 movie is currently filming where Tiny Tina is a main character there, and she’s had standout guest starring roles in the last two games, 2 and 3. I would assume that she will remain voiced by extremely busy actress Ashly Burch, who is also voicing Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West and stars in the Apple series Mythic Quest. I just cannot imagine them giving Tina top billing in a game at long last without her.
The Pre-Sequel has somewhat mixed reviews among Borderlands fans, but it has its supporters and it did introduce a number of characters that ended up being important to the expanding universe of the series. I’m looking forward to seeing what Gearbox comes up with for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and I hope we see it confirmed that we’ll be able to play as Tina herself as one of the classes, as if not, that would be a huge missed opportunity.
Gearbox’s show is next Saturday, June 12, and we’ll find out more about all this then.
