Beautiful deserts and fjords make for stunning visuals in 2020 remake

The trailer for 2020’s Dune may be out-of-this-world, but where in the world were the filming locations for this highly-anticipated remake?

The first trailer for Dune has just been released and it’s safe to say that people are getting excited.

Whilst the film itself looks absolutely incredible, with a classic science fiction story and a great cast, the visuals from the trailer are just stunning.

Now, where in the world are the filming locations for Dune?

Dune: Filming locations

  • The principal photography for Dune (2020) was filmed at Standlandet in Norway, Wadi Rum in Jordan, Abu Dhabi and Budapest in Hungary.

Stadlandet, Norway

  • The first part of Dune takes place on the planet Caladan, which was filmed in Stadlandet in Norway.

Standlandet, also known as Stad, is a peninsular in the Stad Municipality in the northwestern area of the Nordfjord district, which is in Norway’s Vestland county.

The region is a 500-metre-high (1,600ft) mountain plateau that is overlooked by a 645-metre-tall (2,116ft) summit called Tarvaldsegga peak. The western end of the plateau features an incredible cliff that plunges over 490 metres (1,631ft) into the sea.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

  • The red-rock desert scenes from Dune were mostly filmed in the mesmerising Wadi Rum in southern Jordan.

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon is Jordan’s largest Wadi (a valley or dry riverbed) and is arguably best known for its connection to British officer T. E. Lawrence, who used the region during the Arab Revolt.

The valley is an incredibly popular location for filming spectacular desert scenes and has featured in numerous Hollywood blockbusters including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Martian (2015), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Aladdin (2019), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

  • The majority of Dune’s dune-scenes were filmed in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The golden sands of Abu Dhabi have featured in countless movies, but it seems that this environment, whilst beautiful, challenged the Dune cast.

Timothée Chalamet, who plays the lead role, has previously said: “I remember going out of my room at 2 AM, and it being probably 100 degrees.”

“The shooting temperature was sometimes 120 degrees. They put a cap on it out there, if it gets too hot. I forget what the exact number is, but you can’t keep working.” – Timothée Chalamet.

Budapest, Hungary

  • The majority of studio filming was carried out at the Origo Film Studios in Budapest, Hungary.

According to IMDB, the studio has played an important role in the filming of some major blockbuster movies, including Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) and Hercules (2014).
