This Week In TV And Film

The big news in film and TV this week was Netflix’s Tudum, a three-hour long Netflix Direct that should have been more like a 90-minute Nintendo Direct. Other film news comes from the actual Nintendo Direct, where the Super Mario movie cast was revealed, as well as details about the director of James Bond, who had some choice words about previous iterations of 007.

Tudum Round-Up – Stranger Things

Stranger Things Season 4-2

Most of the news came from Tudum this week, so here’s a quick round-up of everything that went down. First off, Stranger Things revealed a new teaser showing Mama Steve, Nancy, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Max exploring a weird house where an unknown, almost too happy family seem to live. No sight of Eleven and Will, who now live elsewhere with Joyce and Jonathan.

Tudum Round-Up – Arcane

arcane-1

As well as Stranger Things, League of Legends’ upcoming Netflix animated series Arcane had its first trailer. It was introduced by Stranger Things stars Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin, despite the fact neither of them are in it. Hailee Steinfeld is actually the star. Netflix is clearly going hard on Stranger Things ahead of the final season, which would explain why Millie Bobby Brown – arguably the mascot of Netflix at this point – also opened and closed Tudum.

Tudum Round-Up – The Witcher

Another reason Brown helped close the show was because of The Witcher. Though she’s not joining up with Geralt in season two, she does star with Geralt actor Henry Cavill in Enola Holmes, which is also getting a sequel. Cavill is a substantially different character in Enola Holmes, where he plays Enola’s talkative and charming older brother, Sherlock. In The Witcher, he seems to be his gruff, muddy, grey-haired old self – but we wouldn’t have him any other way. Season three of the show was also confirmed this week, as was a second anime feature film.

Matt Braly and Ashly Burch

Matt Braly

This week, we had two Disney related interviews on the site, both covered by our features editor Jade King. The first was with Matt Braly, creator of Amphibia, while the second was with Ashly Burch. Though best known for her roles as Aloy, Chloe Price, and Tiny Tina in Horizon, Life is Strange, and Borderlands, Burch is set to star in The Ghost and Molly McGee as the titular Molly in the upcoming Disney+ series.

Super Mario Cast Revealed

Anya Taylor Peach

The Nintendo Direct gave us… Well, basically the entire cast of Mario. As someone on Twitter correctly guessed last year, the titular role is not going to Charles Martinet, who has played the character for decades, but instead to Chris Pratt. In better news, Anya Taylor-Joy is playing Princess Peach, while Charlie Day is Luigi, Jack Black is Bowser, and Seth Rogen is Donkey Kong. Thankfully, James Corden is not included – although maybe Hollywood should just be hiring actual voice actors instead of stunt casting big names.

Bond Director Cary Fukunaga Says Sean Connery’s Bond “Rapes Women”

Cary Fukunaga is the first American to direct a James Bond movie, taking the hot seat for No Time To Die. It will be Daniel Craig’s last outing as the character – as in, this time it actually will be his final hurrah – and Fukunaga has spoken before about the need to modernise Bond without becoming “woke.” This was part of the reason Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge was brought in. In a recent interview, Fukunaga addressed the way Bond has acted towards women in the past, labelled Sean Connery’s version of the character a “rapist.”
