Rob Zombie’s Munsters Movie Nears Completion on House Set’s Exterior

The Munsters director Rob Zombie shares new images of the construction progress for the monster family’s home at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Rob Zombie has provided more pictures from the set of The Munsters, showing that construction on the exterior of the Mockingbird Lane house is almost finished. The Munsters only ran for two seasons in 1964-1966, competing with The Addams Family, which was introduced at the same time. Despite it being a short-lived series, The Munsters franchise continued in the years after. The Munsters Today ran for three seasons in the late ’80s to early ’90s and featured an entirely new cast. Bryan Fuller then tried to reboot the franchise in 2012 with Mockingbird Lane. After NBC didn’t pick the show up, the pilot turned into a one-hour Halloween special.

Now, decades after the original series, director Zombie is preparing to adapt the franchise for a movie. Back in June, Zombie announced he was making a Munsters movie, saying he’s been chasing the project for 20 years. The director has consistently kept fans up to date on the project, showing off character designs, wardrobe, practical effects, and the construction of the house on 1313 Mockingbird Lane. When the concept art for the Munsters’ home was revealed, Zombie said he wanted it to look exactly like the one from the ’60s, and it looks like he is getting his wish.

In a recent Instagram post, Zombie gave an update on the status of the set’s construction with new images of the iconic house. The set is currently being built in Budapest, and it appears the outside of the house is nearing completion. The photos also show off a few other houses they have constructed on the same street, all of which can be seen below:

The Munsters doesn’t have a release date just yet, but the pre-production work seems to be going well based on Zombie’s consistent updates. There is still a lot for the crew to do before filming starts, most importantly, finding the cast to play Herman, Eddie, Grandpa, and Marilyn. Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, is confirmed to play Lily Munster. There are reports that Jeff Daniel Philips will play Herman Munster, but that has yet to be announced. Zombie still has plenty of time to get things in order before filming, and based on his past updates, it’s likely he will keep fans informed on social media.

Given Zombie’s past hard R-rated projects, some are skeptical of the director helming an adaptation of an iconic family-friendly comedy. That being said, Zombie seems incredibly passionate about this project and is also a fan of the original series. Images that have been released so far make it clear that Zombie is trying to honor the original Munsters show, yet he will no doubt include his own flair into the adaptation. It remains to be seen how dark Zombie’s Munsters movie will be; however, the already released images give a good idea of the project’s design.
