Borderlands Movie Producer Confirms it is More than Half Way Finished Filming

Borderlands producer and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford reveals that the upcoming movie adaptation is more than halfway done filming.

Borderlands is halfway done with production, according to its executive producer. An adaptation of Gearbox Software’s hotly popular, loot-driven action RPG video game franchise, which is praised for its story and gameplay, Borderlands is in development as a tentpole movie under the Lionsgate banner. Directing the film is horror genius Eli Roth who, aside from directing terrifying classics like Cabin Fever and Hostel, has also collaborated with Quentin Tarantino for projects like Inglourious Basterds and Death Proof. Roth is helming the adaptation off a script by the prolific Chernobyl and The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin, and thus, it’s no surprise that expectations from the movie are quite high.

Arguably, Borderlands has taken its time to get underway. The movie was first announced in 2015, but work didn’t start until February 2020 when Roth was attached to direct, and Erik Feig joined as a producer. Once the creatives were on board, then Borderlands quickly started filling out its ensemble with the top names from Hollywood. In subsequent months, Cate Blanchett was cast as Lilith, with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart later joining as Dr. Patricia Tannis, Claptrap, and Roland. As of April 2021, the movie has started filming in Hungary, and there has since been an update on the progress of production.

Recently, while appearing on the Gearbox E3 2021 Showcase Livestream presented by IGN, producer Ari Arad and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford revealed that Borderlands is already halfway through its production. Acknowledging that they are proud of what the cast and crew have achieved so far, Pitchford and Arad called their experience working on the Borderlands movie worthwhile. They also remarked that they are psyched about completing the film soon. Read what Pitchford said below:

It’s pretty amazing. So we’re about, we’re more than halfway done with the shooting. We’re about two-thirds of the way done.

Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland and Claptrap voiced by Jack Black in Borderlands.

The idea that Borderlands is already done with so much of the filming isn’t surprising, considering the active updates that have been arriving from the set of the movie. Stars like Kevin Hart have been vigorously sharing their preparation for their parts in the movie, and silhouettes of all major Borderlands characters sporting their game-accurate costumes and props have also been teased. It’s wise on the part of the producers and director that they are keeping audiences in the loop about the film’s progress. Borderlands is highly anticipated, but fans are, nevertheless, skeptical of what its plot may entail as the movie is set in a different universe than the games. Still, the creative team behind Borderlands is doing its best to honor the darkly humorous, space western sci-fi action elements of the franchise, hoping that the quirkiness and visual similarities would lure fans in and help them embrace this new spin on the best-selling games.

At the moment, a release date for Borderlands is not in view. And while the film may already be done with most of the shooting, fans shouldn’t expect the movie to come out until, at least, Spring 2022 because even after the filming is completed, Borderlands will need some quality time in post-production to get its wild and snazzy VFX right. Typically video game adaptions take about four to six months to shoot. So by that law, filming should be just about done by August. Once that is out of the way and the post-production is completed, the marketing campaign will presumably kick off, giving fans a proper look at the characters, their outfits, and the story. Until then, if fans want to know more about the movie, they should look out for set photos and videos as there will be plenty once Borderlands starts approaching the end of production.
