If you remember, we covered a story back in December of 2020 that involved a Maine man making a fake distress call to the United States Coast Guard. The call came in saying that a vessel was taking on water and going down near Spruce Head.
As it turned out, that call was not real. There was in fact no vessel sinking near Spruce Head. Since then, authorities have been able to determine that the call came in from 31-year-old Nathan Libby of Rockland.
According to WABI TV 5, Libby was in court on the charges Thursday and has entered his plea as guilty. Keep in mind, because it’s the US Coast Guard, these are federal charges.
If convicted, which is likely given the plea he entered, he faces fines of up to $250,000 in fines and up to five years in prison.
This goes to show you that even if you think you’re making a prank call and that no one will figure out who it was, it’s still probably not a good idea. And, taking away emergency resources that could be needed at an actual emergency just isn’t funny at all.

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet’s phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.
Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
