From Milwaukee to Hollywood; Airplane! director David Zucker shares new book about Midwest roots

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — One of the best spoof comedies of all time, filled with straight-faced, rapid-fire one-liners was written and directed by a trio of talented funny guys from Shorewood. Among them, David Zucker who’s out with a new book titled Before the Invention of Smiling.

The book is an illustrated autobiography that covers the Zucker family’s immigration from Hungary to the Milwaukee and how his family’s history shaped his journey to becoming one of Hollywood’s leading comedic film writer/directors.

On CBS 58 Sunday Morning, Mike Curkov spoke with Zucker about his Milwaukee upbringing and legendary sense of humor.
